Types of Media in India

Other than the Internet, India uses television, radio and newspapers to get information out to the over a billion people residing in the country.

The Times of India is one of the leading newspapers of India and is very old (168 year old company). Some of the features of the paper are news from various Indian cities, sports, business (Indian and international), entertainment, health, and the world. As a policy it lays more stress on human-interest stories. It also carries features like Sports, Entertainment, Stocks, Infotech, Editorials, Interviews, Letters, Crosswords, and Horoscopes etc. The Times group also owns The Economic Times, Femina, Filmfare, etc.


The major companies that own the media in India


Because of all the languages spoken in India, the country is a host to over 455 printed newspapers with over 66 online media publications. About 85-90 percent of these papers are printed everyday, and the rest are printed weekly.

India also has over 420 FM radio stations. A few popular ones are:

Aamar 106.2 FM , Power 107.8 FM and Oye! 104.8 FM

As for television, over half of Indian households have a television. There are a total of 515 channels available throughout India. Soap operas are popular among working women and housewives. TV programming is available through cable, satellite, conventional antennas, and the Internet.
